03 ยท Your First AI Conversation, Step by Step ๐Ÿ‘‹

โฑ๏ธ 20 min hands-on๐ŸŽฏ Complete beginners๐Ÿงฐ Needs: a phone or computer with internet, an email address

Today's the day you actually talk to an AI. This chapter holds your hand from "where do I even go?" to a real, useful conversation: getting in, finding your way around the screen, ten great first messages, the buttons that matter, and what to do when something looks odd. It works with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and friends, so pick whichever you like. ๐ŸŽ‰

โœ… Key Points & Steps

Using an AI chatbot works much like texting. This chapter walks through every step of your first conversation, from signing in to managing your chat history.

  1. Open an assistant's website or app and sign in.
  2. Type a message in the box at the bottom and press Enter.
  3. Reply with follow-ups to refine the answer: shorter, simpler, more detailed.
  4. Use the buttons to copy, regenerate or edit, and the sidebar to find past chats.

๐Ÿšช Step 1: Get in the door

Pick one assistant for today. Can't decide? Choose ChatGPT or Gemini (the most common) or Claude (famously friendly and clear). You can try the others later, and Choosing Your First AI Assistant helps you choose for the long run.

  1. Go to chatgpt.com in any web browser, or install the ChatGPT app (App Store / Google Play; look for OpenAI as the maker).
  2. You can chat right away without an account, but Sign up (free) to save your chats and unlock more features. Use your email, or "Continue with Google / Apple / Microsoft."
  3. Confirm your email and enter your name and birthday when asked.
  1. Go to gemini.google.com, or on Android open the Gemini app (often already installed; long-press the power button or say "Hey Google"). On iPhone, install Google Gemini from the App Store.
  2. Sign in with your Google account (the same one as Gmail or YouTube).
  3. Accept the terms. That's it!
  1. Go to claude.ai, or install the Claude app (maker: Anthropic) on phone or computer.
  2. Sign up with your email (it sends a login link, no password needed) or "Continue with Google."
  3. Enter your name and confirm your age.
  1. Go to copilot.microsoft.com, open Copilot in Windows (the Copilot key or the taskbar icon), or install the Microsoft Copilot app.
  2. You can try it signed out, but signing in with a Microsoft account (Outlook, Xbox or Office login) saves your chats.
  • Meta AI is already inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger: look for the colorful circle icon or search "Meta AI" in your chats. There's also a standalone Meta AI app.
  • Perplexity (perplexity.ai), Grok (grok.com or inside X), DeepSeek (chat.deepseek.com) and Le Chat (chat.mistral.ai) work the same way: open, sign in, type.

โš ๏ธ Only download official apps

Fake "AI" apps with names like "Chat AI GPT Pro Assistant" are everywhere, and some charge sneaky subscriptions. Check the developer name (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft, Meta, xAI, Perplexity AIโ€ฆ) before installing. More in Staying Safe.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Step 2: A quick tour of the screen

Every chatbot has the same basic layout, whatever the brand:

Where What it is What you do with it
โฌ‡๏ธ Bottom: the message box "Ask anything," "Messageโ€ฆ," "How can I help?" Type your question and press Enter (or the โ†‘ arrow)
โž• Next to the box: a + or ๐Ÿ“Ž Add files and photos Upload a picture, PDF or document for the AI to look at
๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Microphone / waveform icon Voice Talk instead of type (more in chapter 9)
โฌ…๏ธ Left side (or โ˜ฐ menu on phones) Your chat history Reopen old conversations, start a New chat
๐Ÿ”ฝ Top: model picker "Fast / Thinking," model names Usually leave it on the default. Switch to "thinking" for tricky problems
๐Ÿ‘ค Your profile picture Settings Privacy, memory, personalization, subscription

๐Ÿ“Œ Apps change their looks all the time

Buttons move and get renamed every few months. If something here doesn't match your screen exactly, look for the same idea nearby, or simply ask the AI: "Where do I find the settings for memory in this app?" It usually knows. ๐Ÿ˜„

๐Ÿ’ฌ Step 3: Say hello (your first 10 messages)

Type these one at a time (or change the details to fit your life). Read each answer and notice how it responds:

  1. Say hi and set the tone:

"Hi! I'm brand new to AI chatbots. Can you tell me, in simple words, five things you can help me with?"

  2. Explain something you've always wondered:

"Why is the sky blue? Explain it like I'm 12."

  3. Get everyday help:

"I have eggs, spinach, cheese and some leftover rice. What can I make for dinner in 20 minutes?"

  4. Now ask a follow-up (no need to repeat yourself!):

"I don't have spinach after all. What can I use instead?"

  5. Write something for you:

"Write a short, warm text message wishing my friend Sam good luck at her job interview tomorrow."

  6. Change the style:

"Make it funnier and add an emoji or two."

  7. Plan something:

"Help me plan a relaxing Saturday at home with my two kids, ages 6 and 9, on a rainy day. Low cost."

  8. Learn something:

"Teach me three useful phrases in Italian for ordering at a cafรฉ, with how to pronounce them."

  9. Understand something confusing:

"What's the difference between a credit score and a credit report? Keep it short."

  10. Ask about the AI itself: > "What are you not good at, and how should I double-check your answers?"

Notice: you talked to it the way you'd talk to a helpful person. No special codes, no magic words. That's the whole secret, and Prompting 101 shows how to make your requests even better.

๐Ÿ”˜ Step 4: The buttons that matter

Hover over (or long-press) an answer and you'll see small icons. Here's what they do:

Icon Name When to use it
๐Ÿ“‹ Copy Paste the answer into an email, document or text
๐Ÿ”„ Regenerate / Try again Get a different version of the same answer
โœ๏ธ Edit (on your message) Fix a typo or rephrase your question; the AI answers again from that point
๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘Ž Feedback Tell the company what was good or bad (optional)
๐Ÿ”Š Read aloud Hear the answer spoken
๐Ÿ”— / โคด๏ธ Share Create a link to the conversation (careful: anyone with the link can see it)
โž• / โœ๏ธ New chat Start fresh on a new topic

๐Ÿ’ก One topic per chat

Start a new chat for each new topic (dinner ideas in one, the job cover letter in another). It keeps answers focused, and your history turns into a tidy, searchable library of your conversations.

๐Ÿ” Step 5: Keep the conversation going

The biggest beginner mistake is treating AI like a search engine: one question, one answer, done. The real power is the conversation. When an answer is almost right, don't start over; just steer:

If the answer isโ€ฆ Sayโ€ฆ
Too long "Shorter, please. Just the key points."
Too complicated "Explain that more simply, with an everyday example."
Too generic "Make it specific to me: I live in a small apartment and work nights."
Missing something "You forgot that I'm allergic to nuts."
Not the right tone "More casual and friendly." / "More professional."
Just okay "Give me 3 better options."
Confusing "I don't understand the second step. Can you walk me through it?"

You'll master this in Prompting 102.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Step 6: Find, rename and delete your chats

  • Find old chats: the sidebar or โ˜ฐ menu lists them, newest first. Most apps have a ๐Ÿ” search too.
  • Rename: hover over a chat (or long-press on phones) โ†’ Rename. "Italy trip ideas ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น" beats "New chat (3)."
  • Delete: same menu โ†’ Delete. Good for anything personal you don't want kept around.
  • Temporary / private chats: most assistants offer an incognito-style chat that isn't saved to your history or used for memory. Look for a ๐Ÿ‘ป ghost or "temporary chat" icon near the top. Handy for sensitive questions.

๐Ÿฉน Step 7: When something looks odd

What you see What to do
The answer stops mid-sentence Type "continue" or press Regenerate
"Something went wrong" / network error Wait a few seconds and try again; check your internet; refresh the page
"You've reached your limit" Free plans have daily or hourly limits. Wait until the time shown, switch to a smaller model, or try another assistant
"I can't help with that" Rephrase with context about why you're asking (see chapter 2)
The answer is clearly wrong Tell it! "That's not right. The event was in 2019." It will usually correct itself
It answers in the wrong language "Please reply in English." (or set your language in settings)
It keeps getting worse Start a new chat

More fixes live in the Troubleshooting FAQ.

๐ŸŽฏ Key takeaways

  • Getting started is as easy as signing up for email: open the official site or app, sign in, type.
  • Every chatbot shares the same layout: message box, attachments, voice, chat history, settings.
  • Talk to it like a helpful person. No special language needed.
  • The real power is in follow-ups: steer the answer instead of starting over.
  • Copy, regenerate, edit and new chat are the four buttons you'll use constantly.
  • Glitches are normal: retry, rephrase, or start fresh.

๐Ÿง  Check yourself

โ“ 1. The AI's answer is good but way too long. What do you do?

Just reply "Shorter, please" (or "Just the key points"). No need to start over. Follow-ups are the secret.

โ“ 2. You notice a typo in the question you just sent. What's the neatest fix?

Use the โœ๏ธ Edit button on your message, fix it, and send. The AI answers again from that point.

โ“ 3. Why is โ€œone topic per chatโ€œ a good habit?

It keeps the AI focused (no confusion from earlier topics) and makes your chat history an organized, searchable library.

โ“ 4. An app called โ€œAI Chat GPT Assistant Proโ€œ wants a weekly subscription. Safe?

Be suspicious. Check the developer name: official apps come from the actual companies (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft, Metaโ€ฆ). Lookalike apps often charge sneaky fees.

๐ŸŽฎ Try this

Have a three-message conversation about something real in your life this week (a meal, a message you need to send, a plan). Use at least one follow-up like "make it shorter" or "give me 3 options." Then rename the chat so you can find it later. Congratulations, you're officially an AI user! ๐ŸŽ‰
